From these meticulous analyses, this paper argues that After the Last Dynasty reveals the author’s contradiction between his pursuit of achievements and his sorrow for senility.A primary theme of Stanley’s poem is the synchroneity of life and death from his early age to his later writing. Other themes that are involved are rebirth, exploration and the journey in the underworld. However, most of his works present a positive and optimistic attitude. That’s also his attitude to life. This paper believes the theme in After the Last Dynasty is an exploration of the significance of life, not only for his creativity but also for the life and death. Two simple words “tell me” is the best illustration to prove that the author has pondered over a matter of life and death all the time. Another obvious sign is the question in the final part.
